I just did a exhaust manifold repair on my 72 camper 390 c6. The gaskets had not been replaced since 1990. The old manifolds had as much as 1/8 inch warp and twist. replacements new were over $250 and used replacements finally cost $100 from a local machine shop. While waiting i tried industrial J B weld epoxy. I got a heavy piece of glass and glued the gasket to the bad maniflods and did a 5 inch crack repair. i placed the gasket on the glass, ran a beed of epoxy around all surface mating points, very carefully aligned the maniflod and waited for 12 hours. i then trimed the excess from the openings and installed the manifolds. it worked. the rebuilt manifolds came available and i put them on while the bolts were easy to work with. i ran the epoxy manifolds maybe 10 hours. the epoxy looked good when the manifolds were removed.
I rate this jobe as very difficult becuse of the old bolts and access. go ahead and remove the oil filter, drop the power stearing pump, move the window washer, detach the inner finders from the cab and bend them up, remove the negative battery cable and drop the alternator out of the way, find a cement slab or in my case referegator card board to lay on, and jack the front wheels up four inches. six inches was too high to reach the bolts for me, and lossen the exhaust hanger bolts to create at least one inch of slack. saturate the bolts for at least one weak with penatrating oil.
Pray. don't let children or your wife hear your speech. if your preacher comes by and hears you and understands increase your offering to the church.
thats way too much work. just take off 18 bolts unplug the harness and lift the entire front clip off the truck. takes me 12 minutes to pull it off. i got it down to a science.
first remove the hood. 4 bolts ( get help for this, not heavy just bulky)
then remove the lower fender bolts,( 1 each side ) and why your down there, pull the inner fender bolts too.,( 1 each side) then do the upper fender bolts in the door jam. ( 1 each side ) then pull the main fender bolts ( 3 each side ) then pull the last two out of the radiator support. if you have a auto trans unhook the coolent lines. then pick up the clip and your done. easy access to both sides. upper and lower manifold bolts. it is so simple you wont believe it. YEah YEah i hear ya, what about lining it back up ? well first install all the bolts loosely then adjust the inner fender bolts and the lower ones then the rest slides into place and tighten them up/ easy !
great idea too late for this job BUT once the clip is removed can the cab be removed from under the cab over part of my class c camper? there is only 2 inches between them. rust is a problem it might be better to replace the cab than to repair.
i dont know, i havent taken my cab off yet, this winter i am though when i take it all apart to start the restore. when the snow flies my truck gets stripped
