I have a 2002 XLT 4dr 4x4 with 4.0L, push button 4wd and 73K mileage. Just today I was in a spot that needed 4wd and found that the switch did nothing, not even a click. The 4x4 High light does not come on at startup, and I can not select High or Low. I am sure the Control Trac 4wd is not kicking in either, because the rear wheels will spin very easily. Checked the 2 5A fuses #12 and #15 on the fuse box, and the two 20A fuses in the Power Distribution box, all were OK. There is 12V coming into the switch. I happen to have an extra 4x4 Control Module on hand, so it is NOT likely to be that! Anyone have experiences or tips on this? Also where is the control module located, behind the glovebox? Thanks for any info. My email is dicksinventory@yahoo.com .
I found that a new electronic 4x4 control module made by Motorola fixed all my troubles. It is conveniently located behind the glovebox, which folds down out of the way for great access.
Before I left the automotive feild in 2002, Ford was working on its 5th revision of the 4x4 module. A lot of them came to me with bad modules. I would put in the latest one, only to have the vehicle come back some time later with the same problem. A bad module. The systems would freeze up and do nothing. I would even reflash the pcm as part of the fix. It mattered if you had a job 1, or job 2 explorer also. The job 1's seem to have the most trouble. That all has to do with the build date of the vehicle.
I was told $212 for the part. I had bought mine from a salvage yard for $50, as "insurance", did not think I would actually need it. It is also supposed to be exclusive to 2002 only, your 04 is a different part. As long as you have a factory warranty, you may want to look at extended warranties offered on line, often much cheaper than at a dealer.
