Temperature question

2 Days ago, I noticed my truck running rougher than normal, I also noticed that the temp. gauge was spiking up to hot when idling, but would return to normal as soon as I started moving.

Could This be a sign of a failing water pump or blockage? Worse?

Thanks for any input

Mike

I would think it would be a fan clutch going out. It could also be a water pump. Is your fan shroud in tact? It makes a big difference.

I agree with Beast12. I would suspect the clutch fan, and the shroud is important. Low coolant level could cause this problem as well as a bad radiator cap. The cap's job is to maintain pressure in the cooling system. With little or no pressure, the system will run hotter at idle. I would have someone with a cooling system pressure tester test both the radiator and the cap. The proper pressure should be marked on or near a stock cap.

Good luck!

I find that the reverse to that is true, on my 86, the rad developed a small pin hole leak after the rad was rodded out and cleaned by a shop, so it was leaking everytime I shut it off, never did leak while it was running...I let the rad cap loose and the temp went down, and the leak stopped, even in 100 degree weather, it runs cool near the n and the o on the gage....I might add its a 16 pound pressure cap (new) so someday, I'll fix it back but for now, if its not broke, don't fix it....
