Smile Tedga

Hi all and thanks for being a part if this forum. Just surfing around trying to solve a problem and stumbled into here and from what i have read all seem very helpful and knowledgeable.I have a 1993 ranger 2 wheel drive, 4.0 V6. Ready for this with 200,005 miles. Very few problems at this point and love the truck. Recently I have developed a ping when I am driving up a long steep grade and a definate loss of power. I just had a tune-up done today and even though it runs better I still get that ping and loss of power going uphill. I am wondering if the O2 sensors need to be replaced. After that many miles it is a definate possibility. Anyone have any suggestions? Thank you all. Ted

Hi Ted and welcome to FTE

Have you ever cleaned the MAF sensor?
Was the fuel filter replaced?

The early 4.0 OHV has several common causes of ping under load. A dirty MAF sensor, as mentioned, causes the engine to run a little lean, which causes it to ping. In addition, any vacuum/air intake leak can also cause it to run a little lean and ping. A common vacuum leak is through the lower intake manifold. The bolts come loose over time and allow the leak and ping (often most strongly associated with cylinder 5). This can also lead to internal/external coolant or oil leaks. Usually tightening the bolts is enough to fix it, but occasionally, the gasket will require replacement.
Another common cause of ping is carboned up cylinders. A seafoam or similar treatment can usually resolve this. Sometimes just running the engine at high RPM can burn the carbon off.
