What auxilliary guages, in order of importance/usefulness, would you advise be installed for an 05 PSD 6.0L TS in order to monitor engine parameters for efficient and safe use? I intend to use the F350 Lariat SWD at close to maximum GVWR (4000# payload including trailer tongue weight) and use about 20,000 # of the available 23,000# GCWR when pulling trailer. I tried to find the answer through the forum search engine but didn't have any luck. Thanks in advance for your input.
I definitely agree with "tsheriff" that the pyrometer would be my first choice.
I also run boost, trans temp, oil pressure, water temp and volt meter, and rear diff temp in my 04 PSD. These are listed in descending order of my preference.
You have a boost gauge in the 05 but i dont know how accurate they are as i have not seen how they work.
The Oil pressure gauge from FMC is just an idiot light. It shows normal at anything above 7 Psi and only moves when pressure is below this. I added the other gauges because i like gauges with real numbers not a large "over damped" normal range that is designed to move very slowly by FMC.
IMHO if you install only one gauge i would definitely go with the pyrometer (EGT).
EGT and turbo...but get the three pos deal and throw in trany temp...don't really need it but it looks cool....call MotorHaven for all your trucking needs they are one of our sponsors that make this site possible
Thanks for the inputs (fewer than I expected but maybe that's because the subject is not too controversial). EGT, Boost and Tranny temp, in that order.
Now, is the EGT best measured pre, or post turbo? This inquiring mind would like to know.

Your first question may not have been controversial but your second one sure is. This debate is like boxers or briefs, many opinions and lots of debate.
1) Pre-turbo is more acurate but the supposed risk is that a thermocouple tip could break off and go through the turbo causing damage. I have never had first hand experience with this happening, nor have i known anyone who did but the rumor of it happening still exists.
2) Post-turbo is not as acurate because of varied temperature changes, do to the amount of heat that is absorbed by the turbo etc. The temperature can vary based on load and ambient temperature. Temperatures can be 300-500 degrees or more lower than Pre-turbo. Problem is you do not know the amount that the post-turbo is lower than pre-turbo at any given time. You are just guessing at the difference.
IMHO I would run Pre-turbo do to its accuracy. That is how i run mine. But you need to determine what is best for you.
Do a search on EGT install, pyrometer install and read read read. Lots of intense disscussion on this topic around here.
Bottom line know matter how you decide toinstall your EGT, install one. Not having an EGT gauge does not benefit you at all.
Hope this helps
