hello all,i have a 89 ranger 2.9L and all the sudden now when you push the gas halfway or get to about 2500 to 3000 rpm the engine surges really bad almost like vapor lock or something, but is fuel injected and does this regardless of rpms on a steep grade but the engine never dies, you can hold it wide open in 4th gear at about 3000rpm at a constant surge.also in neutral if you just mash the pedal it will pop up to about 4000 and drop down to about the same 2500 to 3000 surge.
I hope this is not to confusing and enough information as i am at my wits end,i also have replaced spark plugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter, dist.cap and rotor button with no change and only does this after you drive for 20 or 30 minutes, check engine light does not come on and my fuel line pressure is 30 to 35 psi.
any help with this ol truck is greatly appreciated, thanks d.
Not all faults will cause the check engine light to come on. It seems, even then, that the best first step is to run the self-tests. It could very well come up all pass (11), but it seems best to verify that, and it isn't difficult nor does it take long to do.
Any vacuum leaks?
Fuel pressure where it should be? Fuel pump can pump enough gas to keep up with the engine (fuel pressure doesn't drop off significantly)?
finally got it right,i was watching how the fuel pressure would act when hitting trottle wide open neutral when it shoots up to about 4000 rpm it surges down to about 20lbs. put a new fuel pump on and now it seems to run better than in the last year.thanks
