Hello All,
1993 Ford Bronco w/ 351 3 spd w/OD 91k miles slips out
of gear on occassion with or without OD engaged. Sometimes falls out of gear and acts like it is looking for a gear to go to.
This a happens for a few seconds and then it goes back into gear. The problem does not occur all the time, I would say 50% of time. Any advise would be greatly appreciated
Hey, I think mine does something similar to this too. I notice when I am going around 40 mph and I give it a little more gas it seems like its hunting for a gear and just doesnt move till it finds it. Mine only has 76000 miles. Does it need rebuilt or what? It has plenty of fluid and doesnt have any small black chippings in it.
From reading past posts I think the problem maybe one of the following:
1. MANUAL LEVER POSITION SENSOR (MLPS)
2. TORQUE CONVERTER
3. SPEED SENSOR
Can anyone help me narrow it down?
Thank you
I have a 92 EB with about 105000 and was having the same symptoms plus the shift from first to second would sometimes be very harsh, bam! I did check the fluid level and it was OK, however, I should have had the problem diagnosed sooner than I did. It turned out my converter disintegrated and took the trans with it. Bottom line, new converter and rebuilt trans. Ouch!
I think I would go with the MLPS first it look care of the shifting problem in my 94 e4od I bought mine from Ford because the one Ford sells is an upgrade from the original one in my Bronco.
I forgot to add that mine sometimes shifts hard into 2nd gear as well. Sounds like the exact same problem. Any advise on where to take my Bronco in for this type of service? I am in Southern California. Should I go to a dealar?
Thanks
How hard is it to change the MLPS? I have a 95 that doing the same thing that you guys are talking about. I was going to take it to a trans shop and have it looked at. They told me it could run as high as $700 to find and fix the problem.
