Nowhere nearly as smooth and silent as my 96 Nissan Maxima's V-6 which is more like an electric motor. Both 3.0 L. The Aerostar is smooth at idle compared to many v-6's I've been in though. If you what rough, try the idle on a nearly new 99 Chevy Astro A friend of mine has. It's noisier too under accelaration. That 4.3L is torquey

The 4.3L Chevy V-6, is not a bad motor when new, but from friends with Astro vans I know, once you get into the 50,000 mile range, they tend to start producing various driveability problems. Here in California, with the smog *****, Astro vans are famous for having problems passing tailpipe emmisions tests. I do give Chevy credit though, at least they are building a RWD V-6 mini van, something I wish Ford would have kept building, even if it was only an Aerostar cargo van. I like the Windstar, but I'm cautious with all of the engine and transaxle problems associated with it. Ed...

My '95 Aerostar with the 4.0 has a rough idle, feels like a slight miss and it's not real bad. My '91 Ranger with the same engine is as smooth as silk at idle. In an effort to get the idle smoother, I've checked all the obvious stuff and I now think that the problem is a plugged injector. Unfortunately, I can't diagnose this at home so it's off to the shop.
