Transmission grinding
I have an 02 F-150 sport, with 4.2L V6, and a 5sp. manual, sometimes it grinds when I shift into third, even when I have the clutch all the way in. it doesn't do this with any of the other gears. a friend told me something about a syncro (spl?) that could be off. any idea why this happens and how to fix it?

I had a 2000 4.2 with a 5 spd. It would occasionaly have a problem shifting into 3rd. It wasn't a grinding, but it would take a little extra muscle to shift. It would only do it in 3rd and not all the time. Maybe it's something common on these trannys? Hopefully some of the other guys will have more info. Good luck.

yeah sometimes I can cheat a little and don't have to hit the clutch all the way in to shift, but third it won't shift like that, it feels strangly familiar to a largemouth strike, and it kinda bounces off.

The older Mazda 5 speeds used to have 3rd gear synchro problems but the newer ones dont seem as bad usually. That does sound like what the problem is though. Replacing the synchro basically means pulling the whole transmission apart and rebuilding it

Nope, just the tranny is Mazda.
In my town the rebuild is $300 if you carry it in.
Is it really worth it? Some say yes, many say no, upgrade. The choice is up to you but it will only get worse over time if you do nothing.
