engine noise

When I go up hills, and push the car at all I get a loud rattling sound, I was wondering if there was any way to fix this without going to the mechanic. I have a 1994 Explorer Eddie Bauer 4x4.....Could it have something to do with the age of the car? and is it something that can be fixed. I am afraid to take the truck on the highway...it just seems like something is going to go wrong. The check engine light sometimes comes on.... any help is appreciated. Thanks

Sounds like you have engine ping, extremely common on first Gen X's (91-94). There are a few cures for this problem. The first one to try is to clean your MAF sensor filaments using electronic contact cleaner. Some people have injected seafoam through the intake to clean out the carbon with some success and finally to re-torque the lower intake manifold gasket. I would start with the MAF, only special tool required is a 20mm security torx tip or snap off the center post and use a normal tip. You will have to disconnect the battery for 10 mins to clear your PCM's memory and after you're done re-connect it and let the truck idle for 10 mins so it can learn the new fuel/air ratio then take it for a little drive. For more info on these do a search in this forum, there's tons of info.
