tank removal
Replaced mine because of Rust
Leaking gas.Its a easy job you will have no problems with. about 2 hours maybe ?
Your truck looks rust free
OBTW Nice lookin too.Hardest part is swaping pumps just do it on a clean work bench.
thanks for noticeing that the truck is rust free. that was 3 years ago when i bought it. now there is rust forming on the rear wheel wells but it still looks good.
why is the pump change so hard?did you have to drop the tank down to undo the fuel lines and the wire connections? did you put a new pump in when you did the tank? what brand and about how much was it? thanks again for the positive comments on my truck.
Had to disconnect them around the fuel filter, then drag out the fuel tank out with significant pieces of fuel lines still connected..... argggghhhh. I spent about a day trying to to disconnect the lines while the tank was still under the car, then about a half day to get them out together, and when the tank was finally out, still spent a few hours to get enough dirt out of the connects with a needle so I could disconnect them. Luckily, I was unemployed at that time, so I had plenty of time.
My advice is to wrap the quick disconnects with electric tape or somesuch in difficult to reach places -- that can save you a lots of ordeal should you ever need to remove the tank again.
, and was able to do it one man that time. As long as you disconnect the wiring harness coming from the sender/fuel pump assembly, the intake hose, and seemingly a sensor sitting on top of the tank, you should be all set. The two fuel lines (at least on the '96) disconnect easily with the round plier-like took you use to separate the couplings. I just threw a heavy table under the tank so that it's sitting on the table and undid the bolts, worked fine. Good luck!
Undo the bolts towards the back of the truck first.
This will make the tank drop so you can get at wires and fuel lines.
As far as the fuel lines are clean up the area first I used compressed air to get all the crud out.
I can't remeber what type of connecter is on this tankfor fuel lines you might need a spec. tool I have them all just can't rember which one
Then you can drop tank
Pump is held in tank with a spring clamp Ez just tap it in the direction to free it.
Pump and sending unit are together as one take it to the clean area you have ready.
You have to seprate the sending unit from the pump.
After market pumps are cheap OEM pumps are expensive.
I'm cheap did'nt replace pump my tank was rusty pump worked.
If the job was hard for you go with OEM.
If the job was EZ go with aftermarket.
OBTW take care of the rust NOW ! it just gonna get worse !
