96 PSD belt and tensioner cost

My first post. My '96 F250 PSD suffered a failed belt tensioner. Had the rig towed to the local dealership. Price for the installation of the tensioner and belt: 600 bucks. I seem to be unable to search up any useful references to the flat rate manual that the dealerships are supposed to (and claim to) use. Something down low is throbbin' after this. Towin' ain't included. Any thoughts on the charge or the unavailability of the manual?

Welcome to FTE!
My guess is that you paid double, not including the tow.
I'm fairly slow by comparison & can do one in an hour including clean up.
AL.

Unhappy Ouch

Thanks for the verification Al. Any thoughts on the use of the flat rate manual to protect oneself?

I didn't even try to diagnose the thing, but when the service manager says "tensioner and belt, 600 bucks," I'd like to be able to say, "well, the manual says 1.5 hours. Your parts department says 100 dollars for the parts retail, so your rate is 500 divided by 1.5, or $333.33/hour. Thanks, but I'm calling the tow company to extract my truck from your possession before you violate it's tailpipe.".. or something like that. I'd love to have the flat rate manual for that truck. It'd be a great consumer protection item on the web. I'm gonna go soak my blue oval bottom now.

Sorry to barge in, but I have found a great technical high school in my area that I use often, they are totally supervised, the work has been flawless, AND DIRT CHEAP.....they charge out at $9.00 an hour and use standard flat rate quotes that they will gladly show you. You might want to check them out. Just a thought!

This is excellent advice. Will look for a school with a similar program. Finally! My long, long wait is over!

He must come here and not log in. I looked at his profile and he had not logged in since August or so of last year. My apologies kind sir.

You can buy flat rate manuals from www.jcw.com.

> My '96 F250 PSD

I have never done one on a PSD, but, I can't see it taking more then 3 hours tops on any Ford. Usually you use remove the fan shroud and sometimes the radiator and it is right there. It is usually one of the easiest parts to replace.

It would be interesting to know the flat rate time and how much you were charged (hours).
