The A/C compressor on my '93 3.0L developed a rattling sound. I first thought the chain was loose but then tracked it down to the compressor. It has a light rattle when the engine is running. The rattle gets much stronger when the compressor clutch engages.
Has anybody had this problem before? Am I looking at having to replace the compressor soon? Actual mileage is 78K.
Thanks for any input.

Remove the belt and with your hand spin the pulley, not the compressor hub, see if you feel any abnormal movement on the bearing, you may just need a pulley bearing, which could be changed without removing the comrpeesor
Ford had a fix for this problem. Ask your dealer to look for a TSB on this concern. Something with the idler pulley I think. They will be able to fix it, but it's not a recall so it will cost you.
