Tip Length?

How much does tip length change the sound? I'm just going to be running a Flowmaster Super 40 out the stock location with the stock pipe, and was going to put a Gibson Stainless Steel tip on. There are two lengths to chose form in the size I want, 8 inches long and 12 inches long, which one should I use? Thanks in advance.

Get the longer one, I use tips called BOOM Tubes, they are 4"X24" and sound really good but they rust. Any canadian will know what I am talking about if they shop at crappy tire

I'd go for 16" or longer stainless tips, no rust worries.

My "do it yourself" exhaust system, Tig is fun!

Starting from the Thorley headers (HPC coated) to collector adapter (2 1/2" diameter) with O2 bungs for tuning F/A gauge, to 2 1/2" diameter into a home made X to Edelbrock RPM mufflers, (2 1/2") then expand in 10 inches to 3"diameter, over the axle then expand in 12 inches from 3" to 4 1/2" diameter, then to exhaust tips 19" long by 4 1/2" cut at 35 degrees. Side shot shows spark plug for flame thrower (looks only, ha!). Inside the tips is a 3" x 21" pipe with four rings equal spaced to fit tight in the tips with three chambers, each chamber has different hole sizes as well as the first three rings so 1/2 the exhaust goes thru the baffle and 1/2 goes thru the center of the 3" baffle. Without the baffle in the tips car alarms went off as this was a deep tone, full throttle was cop bait. Without baffles the F/A gauge went nuts with the vacuum pulse in the exhaust, with baffles there is a small amount of F/A gauge flutter (vacuum pulse). With a 4"x 20" long by 3" id louvered glasspack (test only) in the tips the back pressure made the F/A gauge steady, hence more back pressure. This is on a 68 F 250, 410", must go to 484" later, Carl.
I hope you enjoy the photos ...........o&o>...............

Now thats an exaust system!, now alls ya gotta do is make them thar plugs functional and add some fuel up by the x pipe for them to light. Although the open headers might just do the job for the plugs. What would it cost to make one of them do ya figure or did ya patent it?

If I were you I would go buy the longest tip you can fit under your truck and about 3" diameter tip but no bigger than 4"

Kind of related question but maybe dumb. I'm thinking of adding a stainless tip. I see that the length can affect sound but can it affect performance (exhaust flow/velocity)? Can't see how it could but thought I'd ask.
