I did not put one on my Expedition, but last winter I rebuilt my 95 GMC 350 into a 383 resulting in 330 hp and ran it about a month. I then put on a 1" spacer which seemed to really give it some extra boost. I did not put on a dyno afterwards, but I could really feel the difference.
I later put flowmaster dual outs and a K&N type dual undercar induction on. The spacer really made a difference as did the later add-ons.
Just make sure you get a spacer with a vortex type inside.
I come from a jet engine mechanical backround, and these are all the things commonplace in that community. So if you are looking for any theretical info, look into the basics of jet engines, as many feel that this is where cowl and impact/ram air induction, superchargers and turbochargers came from.

Reason: wrong term used
I put a spacer along with a throttle body and made a great improvement, you can definately feel it. I don't know if it was the throttle body or the spacer but you can definately hear the spacer when you step on it, it makes a swirling noise. My mileage seems to be doing better also, as long as you keep your foot out of it.
