I am in the process of replacing the gas tank on my 56 f100 with a mustang tank as I have seen done here. My question is about the rear cross member which has to be moved. Mine was bent badly so it has to be repaced anyway. The question is how far to the rear should this cross member be placed? Should it be as close to the rear of the tank as possible or can it go all the way to the rear of the frame without causing interference with something else later? Should this wait until the bed is in place and then be bolted in? Thanks guys
I think your frame/box setup is similar to the F1's. The very end of the frame holds the last crossmember/roll pan of the box. I'd keep the x-member fairly close to the tank. If you run a bumper, the brackets mount to the end of the frame rails also, but shouldn't be a problem either way.
you didn't say which tank you were installing but if it's the 20 gallon you won't have much choice of where the back cross member will be... it will be at the back !!!
the 16 gallon doesn't give you much wiggle room either
mine is installed at the rear of the frame rail in existing holes..
