Automatic Transmission Problem
and the handle just kept on moving --very freely.
They had to rebuild the transmission and replace the linkage cable but the real rub is that they also found that the area where the linkage cable is attached to the shift handle was also broken
possibly due to metal fatigue. Just want to know if anybody else has had a problem like this?
My 96 did the exact same thing a couple of days ago, except it was in drive when I went to park it. The shift lever just flopped back and forth, and the tranny was stuck in drive.
I was able to climb under it, and shift it into neutral with the manual shift lever, so my wife could restart it, and then I shifted it into drive by hand, and we got it home.
When I climbed under the dash, I found the shift cable housing had popped out of the bracket under the dash. I popped it back into the bracket, and it worked perfectly.
For extra measure, I secured it even better with a heavy duty plastic tie-wrap.
No problems since(knock on wood).
