I have a 1966 Ford F100, 300 ci, 3 spd manual trans. I am unsure of the rear end type. However, I can tell by driving that it is geared low. I have a 22 foot boat on a trailer. Would I have any trouble towing it short distances? (Under 50 miles). The tows would be infrequent. The engine has been recently rebuilt.
That sounds like a lot of weight for a 300 ci motor to tow, but if you are not going up any big hills or towing in weather above 85-90 degrees, you might be OK.
The 300 is quite torqy so I dont think that you will have much problem towing infrequently. Just make sure you have a good receiver and its properly mounted to the frame. Boats are pretty light, do you have any idea the trailer and boat wieght? Might be worth taking it to a scale and make sure its not way over 2K lbs. Good luck!
You will not have any problem once you get it moving – I used a friend’s truck to tow a heavy car on a heavy trailer from Washington state to central California – it was a 300 six in a 4wd truck. It wasn’t real fast and you had to use the gears on an upgrade, but that is what they are for.
Where you will have problems is pulling the boat up a steep loading ramp – you need a granny low gear for that. All you can do is slip the clutch to get started, but again that is what clutches are for.
Charlie, Ya should be able to pull the boat just fine. I would like others recommend a reciever hitch. I use my 66 with my 18 ft. car hauler to pull full size pickups. I weighed one truck on my trailer behind my truck and the combination totaled 10,520 lbs. I have done the brake upgrades front and rear and have a FE/C6.
Thanks everyone for the help. I live in Southeastern Virginia (no Hills) and will berth the boat at Langley AFB (under 10 miles). The boat ramp isn't overly steep. Seems like it should do ok. Receiver hitch is a must. Already had a bad experience without one.
