Rebuilding an Aerostar

I have a '91 with 200,000 miles on it now. The 3.0L engine is starting to get tired and the 5 spd. tranny is starting to make some new buzzes. I'd like to replace the 3.0L with a 4.0L and put in another transmission. Anybody have any info on where to go to find out what used equipment might fit and what all would be involved in the engine swap?

Consider a 4.0 with its 5 speed from an Explorer/Ranger. You will need the computer/harness from the donor and factory manuals with wiring diagrams from each to make the interface easier.

And on the eighth day, The Lord created the turbocharger

Rebuilding an Aerostar

i have a 91 extended with the 4.0 engine .it has 142 thou. miles on it.i bought it used in fair condition i just had the automatic tranny rebuilt for $1300. the valves tick loudly on cold start up but still are pretty quiet after 20 min. of driving. i was also wondering about rebuilding the engine, it still has power, and doesn't burn oil, but it's so hard to get to the heads i thought i might as well get it all done if the check book allows. did you think of getting a re-manufactured 4 litre? or is rebuilding better/cheaper? anyone know if the 4.o litre oil pan can be dropped while it is on the vehicle?
