You most likely have a 9 inch. Similar to the 8 inch but a bit stronger.

Since I don't like howler diffs, I'd steer you to a dealer or shop where the guy can show you he knows how to do this and will guarantee the reassembly.

A Ford shop manual will have the specs.

Haynes has nothing.

You have to set the depth of the pinion into the ring.

Set the gear pattern.

Set the lash.

Crush the crush collar to a specified torque to properly load one of the bearings.

YOU need:

Dial indicator, stack of shims, torque wrench that goes to 150+ lb-ft. & a
Man-size vise to hold the carrier whilst you ply your craft. And that little bottel of white paint to check the pattern with.

Call me silly. (as others have) but I would "leave it to the professionals".

Especially if you've paid good money for new gears and bearings etc.

I watched a Ford guy rebuild my 8 inch, so that's how I became such a know-it-all.

Good luck,

An 8" in a 66? Like, who did that? Should have a 9" from the factory.

In the case of a nine, you need to do a lot more than just torque things down. Need to adjust the lash and get preload set right. I know there are video's being sold on ebay all the time that purport to tell the novice how to do it correctly. The instruction in my ford shop manual are pretty complicated if you ask me.

I don't have a scanner handly to make copies of my ford manual, and I cannot say that I would recomend it anyhow. Maybe ought to clarify what you have for sure first.
