Hey there everyone, I just have a question this is my first 6.0 When I am backing up or pulling out of a parking spot the truck I have seems to chug or run rough. It performs flawlessly otherwise and I love the truck. Is this a normal charectoristic of the 6.0 or is there a new pcm flash that is available for the truck. It is an early build 1/04 (the date on the door). I am not sure f it is because the truck has been sitting on the lot so long either. It only has 900 miles on it and I have had it about 1 month. I am also not sure what the fuel milage should be at this point.
I have been told to be ware of the early 6.0 but I have had ford trucks all my life and never had any problems. Like I said it performs great otherwise. I wasnt sure if there was a new Flash and after someof the things I have heard about perfromance loss and fuel economy loss after reprograms I wanted to check before I bring it back to the dealer. Also the check engine light has never come on. I asked the dealer when they recieved the truck but they told me they couldnt guve me that info.
There have been several positive posts regarding the most recent July flash- I have this flash and my truck runs better than ever at 38,655 miles. Just my $.02 worth-
Hmmm...I have baaaad vibes about your dealer already...cannot devulge delivery information? Not a good sign.
@ 10,000 + miles I am trying to remember if I had that chugging experience. Seems like for the first few hundred miles my Beast had a slight chug, so to speak, when backing slow into the drive way. It has been long gone though.
These babies do require a certain learning period. Could be that she is just getting her legs. If that is your only issue I would give it a little more time / miles before I take it into the shop.
In addition, I think is very important that you contact your service dept and ask how many certified diesel techs they have and their names, years experience, etc.
If they can't give out that information I would run very quickly to the next dealership and ask the same questions.
My truck chugs when backing out of a driveway or parking spot. Bought truck in May 2003. Remember the build date as March 03, but don't remember. I have 20K, but it has chugged since I can remember. My '70 with a 360 and '71 with a 390 idled better than this thing. Don't understand the problem and scared to get it reflashed.

With that build date, you might still have the original bad ICP sensor. And if you've never had a reflash, you definitely have PCM code that gets into idle oscillations which could be your chugging. By any chance does this problem get worse with colder weather, and/or did it first start after you changed out the factory break-in oil for the normal 15W40 stuff?
If you really want this problem fixed, you need to go in for the latest and greatest ICP sensor and reflash, but sad to say you're going to end up with a louder truck, as it will also get rid of your pilot injection.
Here's my truck back in December '02, when it was 20 degrees out and I had changed the oil for the first time: big ol' rompfest!
My 1/21/04 build date did the same thing intermittanly since the first week I had it. I let it be till it starting surging while driving or even at idle. got worse around 8k miles. I put off the flash for a while and then finally did it since dealer could not find anything wrong. The latest flash is Ver 32.5 I beleive, Had the flash done over a month ago and since the flash I have not had the problem, truck runs great with no Ill afects from the new flash..have 15k on her now and running great. Just wanted to share what the fix was for me,,,
There are a couple of sensors that could cause that as well as oil being overfull. Easiest to check is the oil. The level should only be below 1/2 way between min and max on the dipstick. If it is over, that could be part of your problem.
thanks for the info I am going to change the oil soon anyway. I checked and I only have 700 miles on it and maybe it is just getting its sea legs. It seems to be getting better didnt do it at all today.
I have heard some mixed answers about the oil capacity. The dealer insists that it takes 15qts. but I have heard no more than 13.5. Could someone give me a straight answer.
Also is there anyway if I post my vin someone can tell me when they recieved the truck and the current Flash Software in the PCM.
You guys have a grea site with lods of helpful people. I cant thank you enough for the help. Bare with me its my first diesel....but not my first Ford Truck!!
tThe dealer insists that it takes 15qts. but I have heard no more than 13.5. Could someone give me a straight answer.
The engine does indeed take 15 quarts, but the problem is that when you drain it, all 15 quarts doesn't come out! You can't put more back in than you took out, so 13.5-14 is more reasonable in terms of an actual oil change.
I'll admit I was dubious of the frothing-oil claim, but I went ahead and did the last oil change by filling the oil until it was only midway in the range on the dipstick, where previously it had always been a teensy bit above the high mark. So far I have not had a single case of erratic idle. It was somewhat random before, so I can't be absolutely sure yet, but if it makes it all the way to the next change without a single incident, I'm going to call that theory a sound one.
(The chugging you refer to may well be something else though... my erratic idle was just that, a very slightly wandering RPM at idle, with a faint "miss" sound to it.)
Ford has issued a memo on the overfill issue. Sadly...A lot of techs haven't read it or have forgotten. Kinda otta the box from what they are used to doing.
Oil Level Check Tip:
When checking the oil level on the 6.0, the vehicle must be on a level surface and the dipstick must be fully seated into the tube to ensure an accuarte reading. Do not add oil if the level is above the "MIN" line on the dipstick. Broadcast Message 1512, 1574.
Thanks Again everyone, it appears that the oil is above the full mark. So first thing tomarrow I am going to dump it and put in some fresh 15w40. I was going to do everyother oil change with the dealer as I dont put many miles on the truck. I will document though I work for a GM dealer so I can do it there and document properly. Imagine that a GM Tech driving a Ford... YUP!!!
Anyway thanks again everyone maybe at the first oil change the dealer does I will mention the erratic idle and see what happens.
Are there any additives that are good to use in the 6.0. While picking up the parts for the oil change the guy at the motor craft store tried to sell me some lukas synthetic additive... is this stuff snke oil or are frequent oil changes better that additives in the 6.0 Thanks everyone
