:-huh 96 3.0 various problems

LAST EDITED ON 12-Mar-01 AT 11:56 AM (EST)[p]Hey all,

My 96 3.0 has had some problems of late. One being the o2 sensors. The shop says that the downstream is shot and the upstream id intermitant. The check engine light lights up for a couple of days and then goes off for a week or two and then back on again. If the O2's were shot wouldn't the light remain on at all times?

Another problem is operating while cold. Even if I let the engine warm for 10 minutes or so. When I press on the gas, I get no reesponse at all. Actually I staqrt slowing down. Then all of a sudden it kicks in and I have no more trouble at all.

The third thing is the cold idle. The idle speed increases on ignition but drops to regular idle speed with in seconds. Once dropped, it idles rough and last week it actually stalled (first time).

Are these all releated? my guess is yes, but where do I start. I don't think the mechanics idea of changing both O2 sensors at $120can each is a viable option.

Thanks in advance

Your cold idle problem could be due to a bad ECT sensor (the one for the engine, not the gage) or bad wiring. If it reads normal temperature when it's cold, the computer won't richen the mixture up and it'll run rough until warm. Does your idle trouble go away when the engine is fully warmed up?

As far as the O2 sensors are concerned, I would get the exact code numbers from the mechanic (assuming he read them). There are some O2 codes that will appear due to a problem other than the sensor. O2 sensors don't necessarily die quickly so the light coming on and off may not be that surprising. If the O2 sensors are bad, you can change them yourself for about half price (or less).
