2WD Low

I have a 2001 F350 4x4 Dually. I have heard that you can disconnect a connector under the hood which essentially allows you to run the truck in 2WD low range. My reason for wanting to do this is that I back my 12,000lb trailer into my back yard and it is slightly up hill. I also have to work the trailer thru a 90 degree turn in the process, all on asphalt. I have used 4x4 low range once the truck and trailer are straightened out and it is much nicer have the low range gears than the 2WD high gearing. Could anyone supply more info on how to do this modification so I could run the truck in 4WD low with only the rear wheels activated (aka 2WD low)?

i am sure you could pull the vaccum line off and let the hubs not engage, or you could get a set of completely manual hubs and just leave them unlocked!

or drop a twin-sticked NP205 in but for what you are talking it prolly isn't quite as practical!

you could get a Y valve and put it on the vacum line. connect the single end to the vacum source and the other end to the hubs. leave the one disconnected. when you want 2Low then you close the hubs line and open the blank line and it'll suck air through there instead of engauging the hubs. do you get what i am saying? it's hard to explain over the net. post agian if you don't get what i'm sayin.

I understand what you are saying. I was hoping someone had a simple "how to". I am going to have to dig into this a little more and understand how the 4WD works. It does sound very doable though.

I’ll try to explain this as best I can:
Lift the hood, and on the passenger side, beside the battery attached to the inner fender is a small vacuum header. Out of that header runs a small vacuum line up and over the vacuum pot that sits just behind the battery. (The vacuum pot is about the size of a child’s football). Follow that single vacuum line to where it just breaks over the vacuum pot and you will see where it connects to a 90-degree ell. (Don't mess with any of the lines on that vacuum pot whatsoever!) You can disconnect the line from the ell, get a short (2 or 3 inch long) piece of 1/8” inside diameter hose and slip it over the ell. Get 2 each 1/8” plugs and install one in the new piece of hose and one into the existing vacuum line connector. This will stop the vacuum from pulling on the hubs altogether. But, when you need 4WD capabilities you will need to either reconnect the line or lock the hubs manually.
