ok, i just replaced the original steering pump in my 95 F150 because it sounded like a super charger all the time. i got a remanufactured pump by cardon from the local autoparts store and they said that it would not be noisy, well go figure, it is. its not as bad but it whines really bad and sounds sick when i turn. i know that there will be some noise but not this much. anyone know of a power steering pump that is quiet, if so where to get one, thanks a lot.
I think no matter where you go you are probably going to get a re-built. If you want to go through the labor you can try to exchange it at the parts store and try another.
yeah it just sucks cause before i got the new one they sounded pretty confident that it wouldnt whine as much and now that im at college its not as convenient to take back off, thanks for the ideas.
While Ford power steering pumps are noturious for being noisy....Did you bleed the air out of the pump after you installed it?
There are different theories on the proper procedure...I usually just get the weight off the front wheels and turn the wheel back and forth until the bubbles are all gone.
I have used Cardone products in the past and haven't had issues with them.
no i havent tried raising the front end off the ground. i just did like the instructions said that came with the pump and out of the haynes manual but i guess i wouldnt hurt to try that too.
I agree with a previous poster about Ford ps pumps being louder than most others. However, I just chock it up to it being a Ford thing.
I have never been impressed with the quality of Cardon products and avoid them. I installed a Cardon ps pump on my 76 F-250. Initially it worked quietly, but within the month it was making strange and annoying noises. I replaced it with one off of a parts truck I had lying around and have enjoyed quiet operation since. I also installed a Cardon power steering gearbox and was equally dissatisfied with it. The steering felt notchy and at certain spots in the action jumped. After only 3 months use I replcaed the Cardon unit with one rebuilt by Red Head Steering in Seattle, WA. I had heard several good things about this company on this site and decided to try their product. Their PS box cost $125 more that the Cardon unit but once installed worked absolutely wonderfully. Do a Google search with the company name to find thier web site. I would strongly recommed them. It was worth every minute of the time it took to save the extra money. I sold the Cardon unit to a friend at a small loss in price.
As for good PS pumps check out the site below. I have heard good things about this company as well but, as of yet, not experieced their product first hand. When the PS pump in my 95 F-250 goes bad it will try their high capacity pump. I am already saving for it.
I know that the products I have talked about are more expensive that what can be found at Autozone type stores. However, my trucks are important to me and whenever I can I purchase the best parts. Expecially when it comes to complex components that are subject to substantial stresses.
yeah, mines noisy as heck too, i just always considered it a ford thing, although my 79 was always quiet unless it was low on fluid, but my 94 is noisy when it wants to be, i can live with it until it dies.
I just changed the one in my '89 F150. It no longer makes any noise.. however, the air conditioning pump clutch now sounds like a bunch of crickets.. Go figure.....
