I just purchased a 1992 AWD Aerostar. I will be doing as much of my own work on the vehicle as possible, so I need a good technical manual or two. Does anyone have any recommendations for specific manuals and where I can get them?
You can get the factory service manuals from Helm Publishing (www.helminc.com). Expect to pay about $200 for a complete set, though. They may be out of print for a '92 but they do print the older manuals occasionally if the demand is there. Sometimes you can also find them at the local Ford dealer. The dealers in my area get rid of their manuals for the "older" Fords and the price is right (about $35) but it may take some time to find the one you want. My local dealer has a table full of manuals that they want to get rid of. The factory service manuals also appear on E-bay from time to time and the public library also has them in addition to the Haynes and Chiltons manuals (at least the ones in the Seattle area do).
Haynes and Chiltons don't seem to be as good as the factory manuals but I've found that even the factory manuals are lacking in detail in a lot of cases. Popular Mechanics has the manuals on CD but I've never used one so I don't know how it compares to the factory manual.
