I just aquired an 86' F150 4X4 manual with a 300 in line 6.
It was running fine, when I heard a small grinding noise. I got home, shut her down and now she won't start. I replaced the battery and the coil. I believe that the transmission is stuck in 4 wheel low, but there is no shift rod.
When I try to start her, the only noise I hear is one click at the starter, like it is trying to engage, then a secon smaller click when the key is taken off of start.
So you know you have a good battery. Take a pair of jumper cables and jump across the big posts on you solenoid. If you starter turns, it's good, you have a bad solenoid. If it doesn't.. bad starter.
Also make sure your wire going from the solenoid to the starter is in good shape, and the connections are tight.
Check your battery cables - make sure all connections, positive and negative, are clean and tight. Check your negative cable for any bulges under the insulation - it will corrode inside the cable in strange spots.
Check the battery connections and the jump the solenoid. I have the same truck which is standard and noticed sometime the Clutch switch sticks on mine which makes it not start.. Good luck
