heater/ac selector switch

Hi! I normally hang out on the '61-'79 list, but my '91 Aerostar needs help. On the heat/ac panel, the lever that actuates the little flapper that selects from defrost,panel vents, floor, etc... doesn't seem to be working. It's stuck on defrost/floor. Any ideas on how to fix, and how much of the dash must be tore up to get to it? I'm pretty sure it's vaccuum operated. Thanks for any replies!

heater/ac selector switch

i have a 91 aerostar and had a similar problem. the 91 is electric and vacum controlled. i took apart the control pod and checked the connections. if all is conntected trace the wire/hose comb. back toward the passenger side of the dash. on the 91 the top part of the dash can be removed. look close for the small screws. i took off the top of the driver side pod then took off only the screws of the top part of the dash that i could get at.(need a very small phillips screwdriver) those closest to the windshield i left alone, then i pried up just the front edge of the dash board top panel it came up several inches, this allowed me to see into the top of the dash , follow the wires and vacume hose toward the passenger side. i found a blue hose that had connected to a silver canister had come off. it was right on top in the middle of the dashboard. i re-connected it and everything worked fine. now ac/heater select lever works fine. it took me a weekend to do. off and on chasing the kids ......good luck! rick
