Jerky Ride

I have a 1999 Explorer XLS 4X4, 4.0. It’s got 68,000 miles on it. When I try to maintain a steady speed between 35 and 45 miles per hour the trans seems to stutter or get jerky. This doesn't happen all of the time. It accelerates fine and maintains speed above those or below those just fine. When it does it the truck can be warm or cold. I've had the dealer check it out twice and they couldn't find anything. They more or less said wait till something breaks. This has been going on for around 20,000 miles. I'm stumped as to what is wrong. Any help would be appreciated.

I've noticed a similar condition on my 98xlt, although it appears more like a subtle loss of power than jerky. The condition seems pronounced when the tranny is in the same speed range you mentioned, and when the RPM's drop to between 1500 and 2000(sort of coasting/little gas pedal). Driving the vehicle with OD off at these speeds seems to mitigate the problem(keeps rpms up) Have not taken it to a dealer, but suspect it has to do with the shift points. Don't know if these can be reset for a better performance level (at the sacrifice for some gase mileage).

Thumbs up Here is the problem (2 things)

You have to either clean the EGR valve (drivers side, behind the AC) Just see if it is still opening. I rev it up while I spray Carb cleanr (OX safe) and if it stumbles, it is the EGR. The next most likely culprit (althoughit usually generates a code 332, insufficient exhaust flow) is the DPFE sensor. It is just above the EGR, rectangular with one of two hoses routed to the EGR. This has been my trouble, I have taken the DPFE apart and cleaned/reassembled and the code and the hesitation at speed is gone! Good thing the sensors are over 100 dollars up here in Canada, thats like 5 dollars USD!!
