Four Link Rear Suspension

Has anyone installed a four-link rear suspension in their 65-66 Effie? If so, how does it compare to the stock leaf set-up? Also, which one did you use? I have my bed off right now to accomplish my tank relocation and got to looking at the stock suspension. I think I would like to upgrade to something more modern and comfortable, ride-wise, since I doubt I'll be towing anything with it when I'm done.

A four link is only going to give you the handling based on the shocks and springs you use. The best features of a 4-link is that you can easily change ride height, adjust pinion angles and prevent axle wrap. The springs/bags you use will determine the ride characteristics and payload capacity. Also not that a 4-link generally requires a panhard bar that needs to be mounted as near horizontal as possible to prevent the rear axle from pushing to one side during compression or being pulled the opposite direction when unsprung. This action will tend to make the tail end of the truck wobble side to side unless the panhard bar is as level as feasible.

There are kits out there fro the earlier Effie's that can be used but you will need to modify the crossmenber and the panhard par as the rear frame of the earlier trucks is narrower than the slicks.
Overall, a 4 link will provide a smoother ride over springs because they can be tuned much easier than springs.
