I've been having this problem on my truck for some time. It was popping for about a month, then I got another truck so I stopped worrying about it for a while, but with winter coming I need to fix it. I can hear the fuel pumo turn on, and I can drive the truck, but it sounds like there is a popcorn maker undr the hood sometimes. It doesn't do it at WOT, or in park, but during light to medium acceleration. Also, when starting from a stop I have to feather it back and forth to get 'er moving. The injectors were cleaned out by the mechanic about 7 months ago. I've ran the last 7-8 tanks with teh crappy over the counter injector cleaner, but it hasn't seemed to help. I had the timing advanced a little and that seemed to help, but I don't want to have it that far advanced. Sorry for the novel, but I just don't want to pay for the mechanic to fix it. The truck has 104,000 miles on it, just did tune up, incl. TPS and IAC. I hear the popping from the drivers side of the engine, but a passenger said he heard it from the exhaust. Any suggestions?
I wonder if your timing chain has skipped a tooth. Try advancing the timing some more and see what happens. If gets better again it might be something to look into. Only a suggestion.
Actually I had the timing advanced and it did run better. I need a helper and a dry 10 minutes to check if it has stretched. I also hae found there to be white smoke around cylinder 6 and 7. need to run a comp. check to see f it's the rings or a head gasket. Either way I'm in for some fun. thans for the reply.
It sounds suspiciously like a head gasket to me, check to see if you have traces of oil in you radiator, just under the cap. Also check to see if your engine oil has changed a milky color. Then try the compression test to verify it is a head gasket.
Well, I finally just took it to the mechanic. Turned out to be clogged injectors. Guess I got lucky not having any major wokr to be done, yet that is. I'll be Cleaning out the engine with seafoam this weekend, and then regularly using injector cleaner.
Fuel filters. just wondering if any of you guys know what filter media is
used in fuel filters? If it is paper or plastic , do FI cleaners break
them down and clog the injectors? Is there an after market wire mesh filter
that could be cleaned chemically without replacement ? Darrell
