I have a 95 XLT 351w with about 74k miles on it. About 5 years (and 40k miles) ago, I heard a warbling noise from the back of the truck that turned out to be a bearing of some sort in the rear end. It was repaired under warranty and hasn't bothered me since.
Lately, however, I'm noticing another noise that seems to be coming from somewhere in the drive line. This noise is somewhat similar to the warbling noise from yesteryear, but isn't quite the same. It's kind of a rubbing noise that does NOT seem to be in line with the wheel speed, but rather with the drive shaft speed. It's just too fast to be anything with the wheels.
I'm new enough at the whole mechanical thing to not really know all that much about what's going on underneath the truck, but I'm wondering if maybe there's a u-joint or something making this noise? Or, if not, what else could it be? It doesn't seem to cause any discernable drag and things don't seem to get overly warm. It's just kind of annoying.
How can I go about getting rid of the noise?
Thanks for all the great information, this forum is awesome!
first off, welcome, secondly, do you ever drive your bronco? mine is a 95 with 200,000 miles on it. and lastly, check your ujoints, and bearings. it could be that your ujoints need replacing. if you dont know how to go about this, or what exactly to look for in the drive line, ask a buddy, or take it in to a shop, sorr if i cant help you more.
Thanks for the welcome! Yes, I drive it every day, but I live in Anchorage, Alaska so I don't drive all that much. I've been putting about 10k per year on it, which is about average for your basic city slicker!
I'm just starting, at the ripe old age of 40, to start getting interested in what makes my vehicles work. I have a very basic understanding of how things are happening, but know very little about the specifics of my Bronco. I've recently decided that I'm going to be keeping this jewel for a long time, and want to learn as much as possible about my own maintenance and upkeep. I've also been bitten by the terrible "buy tools and use them" bug.
That's why I need to learn what's going on, because I can't afford mechanics anymore!
