My rear antilock light is on in my 88 f250 and there is nothing wrong it has been on for a while now and the transpotation guys are out quite a bit now checking older vehichles and and i dont want to have to deal with them, i just want to get the light off so they dont make me take my truck in if they stop me. Any ideas would be great so thank in advance.
The light on means there is something wrong with the abs system. There should be a black wire with an orange stripe with a connector on the end of it near the parking brake that you can ground out to make the abs computer blink out a code to tell you what is wrong with it. If you don't mind not having abs (it won't cause any problems) you can either unplug the abs computer module, or take out the bulb.
On an auto parts website that ends in "zone" they have the manual online for free. The troubleshooting chart for the RABS system is excellent there. Print it and follow it to diagnose yourself. Or, either pull the bulb or disconnect the module (above the brake pedal I believe in an 88) and the light won't come on.
My rear antilock light is on in my 88 f250 and there is nothing wrong...
you won't notice the ABS not working under normal use...its in an emergency when you slam on your brakes that it goes to work...stops it from locking and skidding your tires...
Check the fluid level, that the float on the master cylinder is pluged in and the sensor on the rear differential is pluged in also. These are no cost and after fixing about a dozen of these when I work on a service truck for U-Haul this was a common problem with the older ones.
Yes low fluid would turn on the red "BRAKE" light, and it might also turn on the ABS light as well, I'm not sure. Low fluid wouldn't turn on only the ABS light by itself.
I was going on memories from a couple of years ago and was just remembering this would cause it. You are right that by itself low level will not cause the ABS light but will keep it after it comes on. also the fuse or no feedback from the valve it self.
You can also try pulling the plug that goes into the top of your differential and clean it off real good or you can check the fuse for the abs system. I had the same problem on my 95 and it turned out just being a fuse.
