Before you read this i am guessing. I live in the desert were it is 105% in the summer. people who go to a tint shop and get the "summer special" tint job end up with a peeling back window. So a Factory tint is probobly a higher quality. Also (still guessing) it would probobly be the correct shade for the style and year truck you have. that is as far as my thinking takes me hope this helps!
Factory tint is something like 18% I had my fronts 20% because the local tint shop didnt carry 18%. It matched up really close. The only thing is that you can tell the difference when your inside. the rear windows are more of a smoked color and the fronts have a little blue to it.
The factory tint is between the glass so you can not do that yourself. If you go after market then
1 check with you local DMV they will give you the legal limit, each state is different.
2 get the best film you can, if you save a few bucks you will have nice purple tint a few years down the road.
I spoke to my tint guy I have used several times in the past and he said that there is one tint on the market that is a perfect match to the Ford stock tint. He usually uses Lumar, but said the company that makes this is called "MT" or something like that. He said it is a 100% match to the gray tone of the factory tint. I will have him put it on my front two windows soon. On my past vehicles I have always gone with Lumar 5%, but I'm tired of straining my eyes at night, so I'm sticking with factory.
I actually added tint over all the stock tint on my X's windows....
even a 4 or 5 inch strip across the top of the windshield, since it seems I drive south-southwest in the late afternoons a LOT here in Texus and am tired of the sun finding the gap between the visors...
the windsheild strip was as much as I could legally do even though it doesn't come down as far as the visors (dumb law )
IF I recall... I put about 20% on the rear and side windows over the stock tinit and about 35% over the dirvers and passenger front windows where there was no stock tint...

i dont know if they changed it but the factory tint on my 2001 is more of a brown or bronz color. i took the truck to a tint shop i have used before(they have always done good work) and asked them to match the factory tint. i was told they could match the darkness but not match the color(exactly), but they could get it very close.nobody has ever noticed the difference(even when i have told them it was different), but i can tell the front is more gray then the rear. as far as the factory tint, the pigment is maufactured in the glass (like the glass on alot of sunglasses)
Just what 97 Ex said, simple. Most states have fairly strict tint laws but they dont always enforce them very much, although now and then they do. In some states heavy duty vehicles over a certain GVW are exempt from tint laws. I did mine with 20% Lumar and it is almost a perfect match. Usually those $99 special tint jobs use cheap tint and will be purple in a year. And just a reminder, dont use glass cleaner with ammonia on your tint.
