Cam Shafts

I'm thinking about getting new camshafts for my 4.6L, and I'm not too sure where to start. I hear that in order to put in higher performance camshafts, you will need a complete aftermarket valvetrain to make everything able to stand up to the new cams. What do yall know about doing this, what would I need to replace along with the cams, how much would this burn my wallet, and how much more power could I be expecting? Any help would really be appreciated.

Drew

Is your engine pretty much stock now?
My opinion, and I've never played with cams in a 4.6, is that you would probably be better off with a good exhaust, maybe headers, air intake and a chip or tuner before you go for cams.
With most mild cams in other engines you usually dont have to upgrade the rest of the valve train. With a more radical cam and higher rpm you do though.
I have no idea what cams cost for a 4.6 but I do know that replacing them is a fairly big job.

i agree with Racerguy, withouth doing at least the inake and exhaust upgrades, hotter cams would be pointless! on the milder cams, you only have to change the cams. A pair of cams are between $500-$700 depending on the
manufacture, thats just for the cams alone (no labor). if you go with a radical enough profile on the cams then you will need the cams and cam kit. The kit has springs and retainers only and go for $200-$400, also depending on manufacture.I personally have a cat back exhaust, headers,a cold air intake and a the computer has been reprogammed and I have plenty of power.

The reason I know how much the cams and kits are is I just purchased a set
for the 5.4 stroker motor i'm building goingfrom the factory 326 cid to 361cid
so i needed to install larger cams, otherwise I would have spent the money elsewere on the truck

What are your current mods? And what are you planning on doing with the truck? Cams are a good upgrade, but only after you have all the other small bolt ons.

So far the only thing ive done with my engine is Flowmaster exhaust, but im looking at a throttle body spacer and a K&N FIPK intake.
