Question Difference 351W & 351M

What's the difference in the 351 Windsor and the 351 M???

I'm just wondering because they're both 351 c.i. and I want to know what all they have different, besides the big things.

There are 4 351 cubic inch Ford Engines with a 4" bore and 3.5" stroke.
351W
352 FE
351C
351M

There are a few parts that can be interchanged, some with modifications.

The 351W and M share the same bore, stroke & bore spacing which is why the heads will interchange with some minor modifications. Other than thay they are different engines from different families.

So why is it that the Windsor is a better high RPM engine than the Modified and the Modified a better torquer??? Or are they both high RPM motors???? Just somthing that I've started thinking about after I had to put a new engine in my GF's 79 Bronco.

Common myths. The heads on a stock 351M will outperform the stock W heads hands down at any RPM. Real racing engines based on the 351W block all use canted valve heads based on the Cleveland/M design. The M engines were built to be put in large, heavy sedans & station wagons which need a lot of torque just to move them. They were cammed accordingly and never even came stock with a 4V carb which would allow them to breathe better at higher RPMs.

So, it's mainly the heads and the camshaft that make the M beefier than the W?

Yea, we just stuffed that new 351M under the hood, we used the carb and intake off the old one, from the looks of it, it's a dual plain Edelbrock Performer with an Edelbrock 600 CFM 4 barrel. Makes for plenty of power, really strong now. I tried to talk them into headers and dual Flowmasters(haven't given up hope

Would two extra quarts of oil cause the oil pump to sieze up?????

The 351M has a long rod that is better for torque than the 351W. The deck height in the 351M/400 is high and the 351M pistons are very tall and heavy. The long rods and the heavy pistons make the 351M a poor high RPM engine.

Thanks

Probably a 351M in that year truck.

Engine Identification:
======================
351C/M/400 335 series: 8 bolts in rectangular valve covers. Timing chain housing is part of block. Thermostat housing on block. Exhaust bolt holes diagonal.
351M/400 335 series: intake is 10.7" wide the 351C is narrow.
351W/302/5.0L 6 bolts on trapezoidal valve covers. Thermostat housing on intake. Exhaust bolt holes horizontal.
429/460 385 series: 7 bolts in rectangular valve cover
352/360/390/427/428 FE series: Intake goes under valve covers.
There are other indicators but these may help.
