I have a "91 F250 with a 7.3L. If I let off the throttle quickly it dies. If I can let go of it slow enough it doesn't. It always starts back up immediately. Any ideas?

 

I am new to diesels so I am not sure if I can give you the right answer, but three threads up is having a similar problem, and got some advice. Good luck with it.

 

firewolf ... try changing the fuel filter first and make sure all the seals are in place. If that dont work try looking over the electrical system and make sure there isnt a wire chaffing around the injection pump or the connections on the pump are tight. Get back with your findings.

 

Everything seems to check out in that regard. It could be the pump but I'm hoping for something simpler, right?

 

Mine does the same thing every other year or so. It is easily fixed by turning up the idle screw. It is adjustable on these older diesels. They usually will back off slightly over time due to vibration. There are other possible causes but more than likely it's just the idle.
