Diagnostics port

On my 1988 bronco i just spliced in a new diagnostics plug. Upon hooking up the computer it was dead. It was suggested that maybe it was not being grounded. Which wire is the ground and how can i fix it?

Sorry about that reply, i had just woke up and had no idea what i was typing, lol. I am using a Snap-On MT2500 scanner. It has a direct hook up that goes to the batt. on the truck. The ground, however, is through the plug so i'm told. It won't fire up the way its supposed to. On the plug while wiring it one of the ports had two wires while my original only had one coming out of it. So i spliced them into the one wire, could this cause problems.
