Can I MIG weld aluminum (1/8" thick) on a CO2/Argon gas mix? Basically, I want to weld up some toolbox drawers from aluminum sheet and I'm too cheap to buy another gas cylinder. The tank I have now is full of a 75% Argon/25" CO2 mix. The aluminum welders at my job use 100% Argon.
I also want to use the .035" cable liner and tip from an old flux core setup. I've been told that if I use a steel liner with aluminum wire, there may be impurities in my welds, but since this is a non-structural project, does it really matter?
You have to use 100% argon when welding aluminum. You also need a teflon liner for your in place of your existing liner or pop out $3-500 for a spool gun.
