I have a 1983 Ford F-250 4x4 with an in-line 6 Manual transmission. My truck turns over but does not start. I have to use starting fluid to get it started. Once started at Idle it is a little ragged. Once the engine is up to temp , it only drives for a few minutes then shuts off completely as if not getting any fuel. When the truck cools down it can start just fine, then drives alittle then shuts off again. My cousin can usually get it started by messing with the lever on the right of the carb then it starts fine. I have replaced the manual fuel pump filter connected to the carb, the ignition switch, replaced all fuses, engine control module, and the battery. Still it don't start. Also as you read before that it blows oil into the air filter which is located on top of the carb. I can't keep changing air filters or the small filter on the side. How can i check to see if I have all cylinders are working without using a compression tester, cause the truck won't make it to a garage. I am re-doing the whole truck and I am far from any real machanic. Any suggestions?
My 85 150 wouldn't start when it was cold. I was getting all kinds of fuel. I checked for spark at the end of the cable, and it had spark. Pulled the plug, it too had spark. But it was a different story under compression. I put 6 new split fire plugs in, and have had absolutely no trouble getting it to start when it was cold
