I have a 97 Aerostar XLT extended edition. We recently returned from a 3000 mile road trip with a Thule box on top and a Graber 5 bike rack on the back. Needless to say, this did lower the back and and make the vehicle a little less stable. Does anybody have any suggestions as to an approach to stiffen the suspension?
I believe, but am not certain, that Aerostar cargo springs are stiffer than the passenger version, maybe someone can confim this? Also, I think there are several air bag type spring assists that can be inflated when needed for extra boost.
Incidentally, if you would like to improve your handling as well (as long as you're in there), install a rear anti-sway bar and some good gas shocks (KYB, others). You will be very pleased with the improvement.
A set of rear air shocks will provide the necessary leveling when required. I've used a set for several years when pulling a horse trailer with excellent results. These were Gabriel shocks and were easy to mount. As opposed to stiffer spring rates, etc, you just release the air pressure and you have a normal ride during the unloaded periods. I mounted the air valve inside the left rear floor box and bought a little 12v compressor that fits into the same floor box.
Biederboat, where did you get the sway bar and how hard was it to install? Did you have to drill holes or was it just a simple bolt on with no modifications? I was thinking about installing one to prevent the wife from getting seasick in the mountain passes.
Sorry, didn't see the reply for a while. I got the swaybar through Baxter autoparts in the Oregon area. I think it was an Addco. Some drilling requied for the trailing arms on the rear suspension, took about 1-2 hours to install but man, definitely worth it. Wasn't much over $100 as I recall.
