Question Cruise Control Problems

The cruise control on my '90 E350 7.3L works, but instead of holding a constant speed it accelerates and coasts over a 10 mph range (approx.). It used to work fine, although it did the same thing occasionly during periods of high humidity. I've replaced the speed sensor, control module, and actuator (twice), with no change. There is plenty of vacume (19.5" hg). Any ideas? Thanks.

Joe

I wish I knew the answer too. I've had the exact same problem with my 88 e-350 Class C motorhome and my 89 E-150 conversion when it rains.

When you say actuator do you meant the vacuum control that controls the speed? It sounds like bad vacuum LINES to me.

The lines look to be in good shape and the vacume pump pulls 19.5" hg measured at the hose that connects to the actuator. The reservoir was rusted out when I bought the van and replacing the reservoir fixed the cruise control then. The local Ford dealer service department says the problem is usually with the actuator. I've tried three used actuators, maybe they were all bad. A new one is over $150, so I don't want to buy a new one unless I know that is the problem. I checked everything per Ford manual and all is within specs. There is no test for the function of the position feedback sensor in the actuator.

Try napa or a parts store. If they tell you it's a dealer only part, buy a $100 aftermarket kit and steal the actuator from it. It should work as it's vaccum controlled as well. The actuator is a diaphram that moves under vaccum, then there is a valve controlled by the cruise computer that allows the vaccum to "energize" the actuator.
