Talking 1964 a/c

I have the orig. manuel that came with truck when new. It has a a/c unit as a opt. it has a picture of it too. It looks more like a swamp cooler than a a/c unit

64 with A/C

I put a 66 Mustang unit in my 64. (I just happened to have an extra is why) When I went to bolt it up the holes were already in the lower dash lip. Those look a lot like the "hang-on" units Ford Dealers put in back then, so I'm assuming the spacing was the same on most of them. You can pick those up, or ones like them, fairly cheap, if you decide to go that route.

Rotunda was the brand name of the units. I don't recall one before 66 though. They were dealer installed. It was many years later before Ford installed them from the factory.

Browsing ebay few minutes ago came across company out of Fl, if still standing, that offers a unit for 61 thru 66 depending upon year. Have not been able to locate unit that fits under dash for 65. They offer one that replaces heater unit. Too expensive for me right now, entire package is still open for bid at $1100. If curious, item #7922344081. Flagged just to see what seller sets price at.

Any of those small "hang-on" units from the aftermarket will fit under that dash. There are at least 2 of those vendors that have an A/C only unit, that will work nicely. Either evaporator runs $200-225 last time I checked. (that's just the under dash part)
I don't know if Dealers installed (Ford "Select-Air") hang-on units in the trucks in the early 60's, but they sure did do the cars. The full size cars didn't get "thru dash" A/C till 65, so they got the hang-ons as did the Mustangs and others.

Classic Aire in Tampa sells a custom fit unit that goes up inside the dash...replaces the stock heater/defroster box.....sells for about $1100. However, it does hang down below the dash, uses up half the glove box and is a bit dear. I went to a local auto air supply house and purchased the components individually. Used the underdash hang-on unit, Sanden compressor, super flow condensor and all the necessary fittings and the total was $700. The compressor brackets are available from Alan Grove and if you have a modified engine mount system you'll wind up fabricating the brackets to match your own application. My only complaint is that the under dash evaporator fan is a bit noisy and you'll freeze your butt off if you insulate your cab. I can live with that!!!

Here's a link that actually works for the one place that shows several universal units. Most in the $200 range. Phil

Phil, When I tried to fill out the user blocks, I found it only went back to 68. There may be enough likeness that there wouldn't be a problem. This morning I am blank on what the 68 dash looks like. CRS, or oldtimers I guess.

CRS huh?

John, just look under "universal" units. They are hang-ons anyway, so they'll fit darn near anything. The #10020 is about as close as they have to the old Mustang unit. Classic in Tampa has one that looks closer to the Mustang (or Ford) unit, but they are prouder of their unit. $$

Yup, I've seen units like that one before.

I have an idea that I have been kicking around, and maybe someone could sperement a little wid it. The lower edge of our dash is straight all the way across with a steering shaft coming through. I have been kicking around making a 3 or 4 in. wide flat metal maybe with a rolled edge under for strength and attaching it under the present dash. There is plenty room, and this could be used to attach radios as well as a/c vents or anything else.

whatchayathink?

Yeah John, that's pretty easy to fab up. Lot of the Rodders do that to pick up extra space for A/C, radios and etc. I've seen a lot of early F-100's with that setup to.
I always wanted to do a "thru dash" installation on a 61-66, but haven't had the chance yet. There is so much stuff out there now almost anything is possible. I'm doing one like that now on a spare dash for my 63 Galaxie. I want it to look like what "factory" air would have, if they had done it that way in 63.

Later, Phil
