I just purchase a 2002 F250 Crew Cab with 55,000 miles on it which I pull a 7000 pound travel trailer with. I’m overwhelmed by the towing power the Power Stroke delivers! We took a 600 mile trip Labor Day weekend, some through Texas Hill country where we heard a loud squeak from the engine. It happen three different times and always happens after we accelerate from a stop. Took it to the neighborhood Ford dealer and they said I would have to reproduce the noise for them in order to fix it. The problem is it only happens when the truck is under load and may not happen for several hundred miles. My guess is turbo bearings going out since the noise only happens when the truck has been running at high RPM’s. Is it the turbo? And if so should I replace the bearing myself or wait until the noise happens more often and have it fixed under warranty?
Were you running the A/C? Possible that the serpentine belt squeaked when rev's were low & compressor clutch locked up. Check the edges for wear & the surface for cracking. If it was a turbo bearing, I'd think it would squeak once & be history after that.
Thanks for the response to my questions. The A/C was running at the time. The noise was so high pitch it made my ears ring, that’s why I thought it might be the turbo. Your right it could have been the fan belt. I’ll change it before next trip. I think I’ll pull the turbo intake hose and see if the turbine feels loose in anyway just to satisfy my curiosity. The internet doesn’t get any better then this!<O</O
The turbine should turn (spin) freely and not have any play in it ( to speak of anyway) - in and out, up and down. I would venture to the belt and the idler pulley. I would think the turbo would make one "noise" and go on vacation without you. And the engine mileage and age would get you warranty work with $100 deductible. Dont put your fingers in the turbine when it is running - they will call you stubby.
