Just bought a '04 F-250 6.0L, and I am not sure about the idle time for cool-down.Tooling around town,25-35 mph = ? minutes.Freeway flying,85 mph = ?? minutes.Isn't there a gadget to do this?
thanks
Welcome to FTE !
yes, there is...
My remote start will let it idle for a period if I want..
or there are individual cooldown timers if you want...
2nd X with dieself or me, and I've never thought it a concern except if running HARD for hours or pulling hard and need to stop for fuel....
then I'd let it cool down for about 3 minutes max....

You can get them from Motorhaven. I use the X-Monitor gauge and the optional CES module. The CES (cool engine shutdown) will turn the motor off after it reaches a user selected temperature, or when the brake pedel is pressed, or some timeout value like 10 minutes is reached.
I have my shutdown set for 350 deg pre-turbo. For general tooling around town the motor will turn off as soon as I switch off the key. After climbing a 10+% grade right near my house and turning off the street to my house a block away, it typically takes less than 30 seconds to drop to 350 deg and shut off.
Even pulling my toyhauler it has never taken more than two minutes for the temp to drop to 350 and shutdown - even when it was over 100 deg outside. Usually by the time I pull up to the pumps at a truck stop after turning off the interstate the truck is down to 350.
I think I'm going to start building these shut down modules. This way I can customize the time and such. hey I'll just build a sending unit and put in a thermocouple while I'm at. humm ideas are comming to me. sounds like I need to go to the drawing board . . .
Ideas guys and gals . . . what would be your ideal shut down timer any cool features you can think of? I'll do the circuit design just help me with ideas. Time recomendations and such or what ever you think up.
These timer are BS. I own and drive a C15 CAT 550 HP and unless I am pulling the truck hard I hardl ever let I cool down. It is just a waste of fuel and hard on the equipent. I have 563,756 on my CAT and no problems. The only time you need to cool you truck is when you are pulling it hard.
Of course I do and know you'r epulling my leg if you don't
Two reasons I do....
One - it be hot heyer in Texus and I don't want to add anything to it
if not in Texus, that means I'm travelling and have to go "wash my hands"
Two - our super sensitive Ford gas gauge will not register properly if the key is on while filling up
I honestly never turn off my truck when I fill it up. I don't have the overhead trip guages so that doesn't worry me and I always just fill her up.
On our Excursion we have to turn if off and back on after refueling cause the puter does need to reset.
Is it only AZ where that's against the law & they actually enforce it? I rarely find a gas station or truck stop where I can leave it running. I drive mine pretty hard with a truck camper with slide-outs pulling a 28' boat (85 - 95 hwy). I'd like to let mine cool down but they watch you here.
Two minutes of idling, until you get your gauge, will work to stabilize temperatures to make it safe to turn off. The big problem with turning off too soon is that the shaft that connects the exhaust turbine with the intake turbine will get hot enough to cook the oil that lubricates the shaft bearings. That is often referred to as coking. Just two minutes is enough to stabilize the temps and supply enough oil to keep it from coking.
Arlington, Tx has a law that says it is against the law to leave your car idling...
but they passed that as an anti-theft item I think....
but just like a lot of laws though, not sure they thought of all the issues...
like the remote starter possibility, I challenge them to stop me from using my remote starter
but most fuel stops DO have the sticker to stop engine... which I always do...
and usually ask the doofus next to me filling up with gas to put his cigarette out at lleast until I leave

SBV....
is coking still a problem ?
While I do let mine idle for a bit after a hard run before shut down...
I saw a specialist on Horsepower tv that said with the newer technolgies in the oils that that wasn't a problem any longer.... especially with intercoolers and oil coolers...
