Please help! Spongy Brakes
Here's the scoop. I have a 1985 F-150 with the 300 4.9L. It has 487,000 miles on it. I just rebuilt the motor, and the front suspension. I put a new master cylinder, rubber lines, and wheel cylinders on it. I bench bled the crap out of the master cylinder, and even ran 3 of the big bottles of brake fluid through the system. There's fresh fluid coming out when I open the bleed screws, and absoluetly no air coming out. But it's still really spongy. The pedal goes right to the floor. I have to pump the pedal to get it to stop. Like it still has fluid in the system. I'm pulling my hair out over this. Anybody have any ideas? I tried looking for a new proportioning valve for it, but I can't find anybody who sells them. The only thing left is calipers, or proportioning valve! Thanks for your help!

You don't mention the rear brakes....check adjustment? New master cylinder could be bad from the box. Proportioning valve possible, but not likely. The junkyard is the only source I have found for the proportioning valves.

Check the rear brakes for adjustment and wear. Also take a real good look at the power booster if equiped. I have an 86 with the 4.9 , replaced the calipers and master because they were shot. Got all the air out of the system but still didn't have a good pedal. Checked the rear and adjusted. Turns out the power booster was shot from sitting around. You can get that from Napa which will run you about $70 plus core. Hope this helps
