Good morning all. Long time lurker, first time poster. I have an 84 f150 4x4 with a 5.8ho, auto tranny. Truck has a recent rebuilt carb (professional) but has suffered from hard starting since I got it year and1/2 ago. Not a daily driver so when I tried to start it recently after heavy rain, no go. First thought it was wet then thought I had flooded it but still wouldnt start after letting it sit. Tried starter fluid and engine fired up but then stalled after fluid burnt off. After trouble shooting believe its fuel pump, no gas in carb after repeated pumping of pedal. Engine turns over and plugs/ wires fairly new. If it is pump, where would it be located and is it something a newbie with limited experience could fix. On a side note, noticed that a gas tank strap rusted and broke so tank is at an angle. Hard starting before strap broke and tank is currently full. Thanks
More than likely it is your fuel pump or the filter is full of water or crud from the tank, you can get a strap at most wreaking yards, it just unbolts and tightens with the hook at the end around half of the rear tank. You could also have some bad gas in it and it would perhaps need to be drained or put a conditioner in the tank for the purpose of increasing the occtain and removing any water contaments. Usually the fuel pump is on the right side or just trace the fuel line from the carb till you find it. Remove the line and try starting it to see if it will pump, is another solution to figureing if its the fuel pump, but replace the fuel filter anyway. Have a helper turn it over while you put the line in a container to see what comes out if any...you won't have to turn it over very much for it to pump out...thats one of the easiest ways to check it.
