Thanks for the replys. Sure enough, my EGR valve was not working because the small cylindrical restrictor valve in the vacuum line from the coolant temperature switch to the EGR valve was evidentally installed backwards. When I removed the restrictor my EGR valve worked really well. I haven't test driven it yet but I'll find out if the driveability has improved on my way to work tomorrow. The cylindrical restrictor is a one-way valve so if it is installed backwards no vacuum gets to the EGR valve. I hope I'm guessing correctly on this issue. I'm having fun anyway.

The EGR opens with vacuum. Have you checked the condition of the EGR valve and the EGR distribution plate under the carb? You should have done that when you rebuilt the carb but one never knows.

Hi Eric, Thanks for all of your help. Is there any drawback to removing the EGR valve, plugging the vacuum lines and the EGR port, other than emissions? I don't have to deal with emissions laws with this truck where I live.

If you disable the EGR valve the engine will ping at light throttle loads. This ping can be eliminated by adjusting the vacuum modulator if you have an adjustable type. If you did not remove the EGR plate when you repaired the carb you might want to go back in and check the plate for corrosion and leaks. They frequently rotted out and produced a leak path. The valve itself can be cleaned and/or replaced.

Thanks Eric. Where would I find the vacuum modulator if my truck has one and/or can I add one if my truck didn't come with one? '76 F250, 360, 4X4, NP435 when stock but a C6 now.

Thanks again.

The vacuum modulator is that can on the side of the distributor. You adjust it with a 1/8"(?) allen wrench thru the vacuum port where the vacuum line is connected. You can find more information on the adjustment in the engine forums. Your repair manual may have pictures also.

I'm not familiar with a can on the side of my duraspark II distributor other than the vacuum advance diaphram unit which has a vacuum line going to it. Is that the can you're referring to and if so I dont think mines adjustable. I cannot get my apostrophy to work on this keyboard. Very wierd.

Yes that is the one. I have been reading too many transmission questions and the names got jumbled. -Sorry.

Off the subject but I had a Belkin keyboard that would randomly loose keys.... If you re booted everything was fine. I trashed it after a month or so and bought the Memorex keyboard I am using at the moment. I like it I go thru keyboards about every six months to a year.

I believe you can, I don't know any part number tho. Check yours first to see if there is a hex screw adjustment inside the port.

Eric, Since my distributor has vacuum advance and centrifigal advance could I just remove the vacuum line from the vacuum advance unit and remove and plug the EGR valve port and run with only the centrifigal advance. Id have make sure I didnt have any open vacuum lines or ports.

If disabling the EGR causes a ping how come my 69 351W doesn't ping and it doesn't have one? Is it because they leaned out the carbs so much it caused the cyl to run hotter, and the EGR cools it down? Hmmm sounds logical.

Maybe I could just richen up the carb or get a carb from a non-EGR truck a distributor too for that matter.

Sometimes it does not cause a ping. It depends on initial timing and other factors. Do not plug the vac advance. Your engine needs both to operate properly at part throttle.

A carb and distributor from a non-EGR engine would be OK but the ones you have now are OK.
