I have a 86 f-250, 6.9L Dsl. the truck is smoking while driving & a guy @ work said to check the Injector Pump Timing, thinking that might be the cause. I have no clue. Could this be the the cause or something else? Thanks in advance for any assistance.
Dave, it smokes continuously. Its not a blue smoke, more like a white & it smells more like fuel then oil. I do almost all highway driving, only city driving I do is to get to the highway (about 1000 miles/week), & its smoking the entire time. Its a bear to get started, with bellowing clouds of smoke while cranking & finally it will start. Then no more problems starting after the first start of the day. The glow plugs were replaced 2 weeks ago.
If the injection pump was worked on about the time it started smoking I would say yes that could be the problem.
If it just started on it's own and is getting worse as time goes on, I think I would be more inclined to point a finger at the injectors themselves. There is also a possibility that the pump is needing replaced.
Instead of just changing parts till it is fixed,(pronounced expensive) this is an instance that really needs to be checked by a garage that has proper tools to check the injectors, pump and pump timing. If you have a diesel injection service close to you, that is where I would go. Ford is not the best place, unless they have a diesel truck department, and that still does not make them the best place.
Did you have another thread about this truck?
I am trying to remember.
Next questions, how many miles on this engine?
Did you try to loosen the lines to the injectors and see if any of them did not make any difference in the way it ran?
Have you changed the fuel filter recently?
Have you changed the air filter recently?
Has the engine performance dropped off noticably when this started?

Thanks guys, sorry its taken me so long to reply. To update: 86 f250, 6.9L, 67,000 miles (original)! I didn't try loosening the lines, as I am new to diesels & don't know much about them. The fuel & air filters have been replaced in the last 2000 miles. The truck runs great, no hesatation, missing, nothing - I'm putting on about 150+ miles a day on the truck at speeds up to 75-80 mph & the whole time its smoking & never stops smoking (smells like fuel)! All the grow plugs are new, but the first start of the day is difficult. After that, no problems what so ever; starts on the first turn of the key.
