BUT I went to check the charging system, pulled the negative cable and the motor started to die. This means the alt isn't cranking out right??
Try not to use this type of test. It can burn your radio and your ignition module up. If you want to make sure it's the alternator, leave the regulator connected and just disconnect the alt wires while watching the testlight.
Looks like you are on the verge of fixing it though.
I got the new volt reg and a new alt Thursday afternoon. Swapped the volt reg, swapped the alt and things looked good. I also found a issue with some of the wiring while swapping the alt. The main line had corrodded completely in two inside the loom/elec tape mess. I ended up cutting out a section and splicing in some new line and wrapped it in heatshrink tubing and then re taped it all. The truck runs SO MUCH BETTER, and the battery is holding and charging. We just bought a fixer upper out here and the truck did great with hauling sheetrock and 2x4's and some new frenchdoors.
Thanks for all your help, hope this is the end of my electrical gremlin for now...........
I got the truck running good like said in last post. Now my turn signals have quit. I can turn on the hazards, but when using the signal lever, nothing happens on either side. Could this be as simple as a fuse?
Well, picked up a pair of flasher fuses last night. Emergency flashers still work, but the turn signals still DO NOT. So, what would be the next thing to start chasing?
I started fooling with the turn signals again yesterday.
But I didn't start at the bottom end like I probably should have. I pulled the steering wheel, and started looking at the big switch unit on the column. Following the shaky Chilton directions, my goal was to separate the hazard portion from the turn signal portion and inspect them both. But unlike the directions said, I don't see any quick release tabs, and have slightly buggered the thing now. I thought they would pop apart with some light elbow grease.
I figure, if I can get it apart, I should replace it now wether it needs it or not since I started prying at it. BUt I can't seem to get it apart so I can disengage the wires to replace the unit.
Anybody got any input?
I'd like to get her fixed up for some serious dump runs this weekend.
