I just finished my catback exhaust system. It sounds great. I paid 290.99 on ebay. Everything was intact and it was still sealed in the box. The hardest past was taking off the old system. I have to break the grinder and reciporcating saw. Man, it was a good investment. I noticed that there is no hesitation on the acceleration anymore.
Green, How do you like that single exhaust. I have the stock system on my 96, and I need something a little louder. Besides that, I don't think that stock 2 1/4 or 2 1/2 inch tailpipe lets that 351 breath too well. I love the sound of duals, but want to keep my low end torque. I very rarely run over 2000 rpm's.
the guy i bought my bronco from had the flowmaster catback system already installed...it probably cost half of what i paid for the truck and he did a great job
Steve it's not too bad,it is getting louder! But if i want loud all i have to do is fire up the old Ford truck i have,it has duals with glass packs!! The Bronco has a 3in muffler and tail pipe, just wish i could have taken off one of those converters!!
Actually, I have a 302 and I bought the bolt-on Flowmaster that came as a kit. It wasn't too bad to put on, it only took about 30 mins. The hardest part was taking the old one off. It doesn't have a really loud rumble, but it does have that classic flowmaster sound. There really isn't any cab noise, until you romp on the pedal. It was a pretty good investment. I found some that retailed for around $400, but I found some cheaper on Ebay.
I had my Flowmaster catback w/duals installed last year for $300 at a local shop. Best mod for the Bronco! The sound is awesome, more power, and slight increase in MPG.
you shouldn't need to weld anything to replace the stock exhaust. Keep in mind that a cat-back system will not replace the intermediary pipe (y-pipe) which houses the cat(s). Unless you get a new intermediary pipe (h-pipe), you'll still have single exhaust, probably with dual outlet. Of course, there are very small performance gains from a cat-back and very big sound gains if you get the right kit .
If you ever do want dual-exhaust, you're better off waiting to invest in that since your bolt-on cat-back (designed for use with a y-pipe) won't work with the new h-pipe setup. If you want true dual exhaust, I recommend finding an exhaust shop who either has a mandrel pipe-bender or who stocks pre-bent sections. They can fabricate you a completely legal 2-cat high-flow dual exhaust Flowmaster / Bassani / Dynamax / Borla / Whatever system for around $500-$600. You pick the type of muffler you want, and the rest is custom. For real power gains, you'll need headers too... but I guess this is all a little more info than you asked for.
Anyway, you won't need to weld the bolt-on cat-back system. It just might be hard to get the old pipe out without cutting it, and you don't need a welding torch for that.
Yep, I had to break out the grinder (to cut the pipe clamps) and a reciporcating saw (to cut up the old pipe). It was more work taking out the old one and installing the new one.
I just had a single inlet/dual outlet 40 series flowmaster with 3.5 inch stainless tips installed on my truck yesterday and man does it sound good. Cost me $280 at a local shop and it looks awesome with the big polished stainless tips.
